"You should hang out with Peter and me after school!" Ned suggests enthusiastically, then looks to Peter for confirmation. There's a beat that MJ’s body fills with nervous tension, and she’s not sure what she wants his answer to be.
"Yeah." Peter agrees, and MJ’s nerves reveal they’d wanted him to say no, and that she’s not ready, and that she should be finding a way out of this development. "You can come if you want. We're not really doing anything, because we don't have anything to do, but..."
"You're not busy with your internship?" MJ asks without thinking.
Peter's face turns grey, and he looks almost haunted.
"No, I...we just got back." He says quietly.
MJ could kick herself.

Lucas saw her in a way that nobody else ever has, and while that should be a rewarding and relieving feeling, it terrified her. Max lived her entire life trying not to be seen so to find someone who saw through all her facades and liked, no, loved, her sent chills through her body. Very few people managed to pass through the walls Max built up around herself, but Lucas crumbled them slowly, day by day. No matter how much she tried to repair the rubble and salvage her lasting guards, Lucas always found his way around it all.
