Max understood what it meant to want to win. He understood the hunger, the way it ate at you from the inside, the things you had to give up to feed it. He'd made those sacrifices himself. He'd given up birthdays and weddings and entire summers. He'd given up friendships, sleep, his body's natural rhythms. He'd built his entire adult life around that singular focus.
