Summary
So: the thing about controlling your own timeline for coming out to the public about being engaged to the your very public rival who just so happens to also be the love of your whole goddamn life?
You’ve got a lot of leeway. A lot of opportunities to slip up and give yourself away.
Though: should your fiancé just so happen to be an absolute menace and troll extraordinaire on main, you might end up giving yourself away all the goddamn time, and on purpose, while no one fucking notices.
OR: three times Ilya and Shane really should have been caught out for being halfway married, and one last time when they (read: Shane) finally accepted that people were generally too stupid to put the obvious pieces together, even if those pieces were painted in neon colours, sitting right in front of their faces.

Summary
“Don’t worry?”
Shane’s hackles raise, because not long ago he’d read Ilya’s last words and felt his heart stop. And not long after that, Shane watched Ilya collapse, fade, and everything in his own body leaped to follow.
Worry seems pretty appropriate, actually.
“Shane,” and the way Ilya says his name, like it’s something precious, will never stop shaking Shane with the double-tap of his blood, rising to the wonder of it; it’ll never stop making Shane feel seen for every raving thought and fear and dread he’d spent his whole life hiding, like Ilya’s first language was Russian, but his mother tongue was Shane.
“I mean only you don’t need to worry, it will all be fine,” Ilya says so gently, steeped in more love than Shane quite knows how to hold. “Is natural for me.”
“Scaring the fuck out of me? Yeah,” the words pop out, like Shane's jittery heart knocks them past his lips without meaning to: “kinda starting to seem that way.”
-
A record-breaking blizzard meets the desperate need to see the love your life despite it—should be okay, right? Snow's natural for your husband, he'll be fine.

Summary
Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.
Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.
Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.
__________
Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.
Shane—waiting for his fiancé in a hotel room, watching the man he loves more than life collapse on the ice in high definition, the light vanishing from his eyes, the feed cutting just before a crash cart descends upon him—
Shane realizes swiftly—painfully—that he was really fucking wrong.

Summary
This is not how it’s supposed to fucking go.
Like, they’ve been working so hard. They’ve been making so much progress. Sure: the natural, necessary consequence here is that the more progress they make, the less insight they get into the coming fight. But it’s been over a year. Well over a year. Waiting that long is just…
They hadn’t thought it was all over, but they were so close, it wasn’t wholly just wishful thinking that they’d be done, and back, and home, together, before everything exploded for real.
Not wholly wishful thinking.
But enough that it was now back to bite them in the ass.

Summary
In a word, it’s been unexpected.
Fucking Steve Harrington, that is.
-
Or: it starts with a blow job exchanged for weed when Steve forgets his wallet.
It continues with Eddie catching feelings so hard he almost chokes on the need to swallow them down and keep Steve at arm's length—for safety. Self-preservation.
It might just end before it begins, when Eddie gets the courage to confess how he feels, and drives to the mall. To talk to his friend-with-benefits.
On the Fourth of July, 1985.

Summary
The chronicles of Eddie Munson, ‘famous-enough’ rockstar with a feral cult following, and his long-suffering husband Steve Harrington, who puts up with his spouse’s shenanigans because that man is the love of his life (and if he were anything less than the love of Steve’s life, Steve might have committed a felony by now in response to the shit that man pulls).
Up to, beyond, but crucially including the Situation with the Limited Edition Custom-Cast Dildo Box Set™—because that might have been where the story began here, but like hell was it the actual beginning of the tale, and it sure as fuck isn’t the end of it.
Not even close.
