Max leaned back against the brown couch, silent as he watched David move gracefully around the kitchen. The aroma of dinner filled the air, mingling with the soft sounds of sizzling and the occasional hum of a tune David was quietly humming to himself. It was a routine they had fallen into over the years – David cooking, Max observing – yet tonight felt different.
Max remembered when he ate David's food for the first time, all bland and unseasoned. Maybe his standards were too high on the bar, coming from an Indian household. And he was glad the older man learned how to cook like a normal person.
As he observed David's back, Max couldn't help but feel a warmth spreading within him, a warmth he couldn't quite put into words. David had been there for him, steadfast and unwavering, ever since Max's parents failed to show up to pick him up from camp four years ago.
