But then Monday would come. Or Sunday service. Or a double date with the husbands, and Margo would smile over dessert like nothing in the world had ever happened.
Callie started to wonder if Margo needed that—the secrecy, the distance, the sometimes having and the sometimes not.
If that’s what made it feel safe for her. Like a game with rules she’d already mastered. But for Callie, it didn’t feel like a game, it felt like drowning, and she kept going back anyway, hand over mouth, breathless with wanting.
