Back then, the fact that her older sister was a grownup had been the most wonderful thing in the world. It was what all kids dreamed of: No parents, no rules, just you and your best friend—your big sister who knew all there was to know.
Ema has never felt unlike herself. Scientifically speaking, herself is the only self she could possibly be, and there's no way to express this that would make it untrue. As long as she's been alive (or at least, conscious) she has felt plain and curious and has known that the world is full of strange and incredible things that aren't made for her, and maybe when people, real people, learn these sorts of things, they go and find a group of like-minded people. In the schoolyard, this is an easily-tested hypothesis—nerds find nerds, pretty girls find pretty girls, etcetera. A gaggle of weirdos. A secret language. But all Ema has is Lana; and now, Lana is different.
