As Varric draws closer to the elf, he notices the order in which the books were sorted on the shelves.

And Varric stops, close enough to spy on the book the elf was reading. It is his Swords and Shields. By then, the elf had noticed the dwarf man standing two feet away from her, staring at, not her, but the book she is holding.
"Can I...help you?" said the rather tall elf.
The question pulls Varric out of his head.

Chu Wanning’s heart races as Taxian-Jun leans in close, ignoring the shouts and gasps around them.

Chu Wanning bites his tongue, fixing a cold glare on an infuriatingly unfazed face. Mo Ran appears to be genuine — though why he’s so hung up on treating him in the first place, Chu Wanning has no idea — and the dizzying smell of pastries straight out of the oven is definitely playing in his favor. God dammit.
“We,” Chu Wanning begins slowly, sternly, desperately, “are only here to try their cake. We are not going to play pretend.”
“Believe me,” Mo Ran says, a soft smile playing at his lips. “Playing pretend with you is the last thing I’d want to do.”
In which Mo Ran and Chu Wanning pretend to be engaged for free cake.

Summary
When he wakes, Chu Wanning does not know where he is.
He lies on a comfortable bed in a sunlit room but its walls and contents are unfamiliar. Worse still, there is a man, a stranger, sleeping beside him.
Chu Wanning scrambles off the bed in panic, crashing onto the floor with a hard bump when his body gives out under him the minute he puts weight on it. It is at this moment he realizes there is something dreadfully wrong with his own body. He’s older than he expected to be, he has no core and he’s covered with injuries he does not remember getting. His hand unconsciously moves to where he had dug his core out in front of his Shizun - he remembers the blood, he remembers Huaizui rushing towards him right before he fell. He doesn’t remember much else.
