Whumptober 2023 Day 20: Blanket/Found Family/You will regret touching them
He sits on the bed in their small roomette, one bed for them both and a table that Ed has stolen to research and write, his body is plagued by aches and throbbing in his head, a high fever that saps the heat from his body. He was warned of this, rambled words from a doctor, and it’s nothing he hasn’t dealt with, but exhaustion is wrought and it’s like Ishval once again, a painful reminder of the wounds he carried and the infections that robbed many soldiers of life.
Edward yawns, and Mustang allows himself to be pulled from the emerging memories to focus on the boy. Eyes are dark and lidded, shoulders sagged and cheek smushed against a metal hand. He gives himself a shake and glances to the clock. The only source of light, a small lamp that illuminates the room with a honey glow, makes it hardly manageable to read the time that ticks on the clock face.
“Bedtime, Edward,” Mustang croaks, a clip in his voice as he shivers. “Nearly 1.”
Or
A train ride back from a scrabble, Mustang is fevered and cold, and Edward is sleepy and teasing. To his surprise, Edward can be surprisingly sweet and affectionate.

So yeah, this wasn’t the best morning Edward had woken up to.
