It's a well-known fact that, for the longest time—Shin Junghwan has had this cute, innocent little puppy-crush on the handsome guy in the apartment next door.
The guy? Choi Youngjae's older brother.
Youngjae? He's used to being stuck in the middle, watching from the sidelines, a perfect fly on the wall.

“Yah, Choi Youngjae. Do you already have a group for the school trip?” Dohoon waves his hand in front of Youngjae’s face, mouth smiling like he didn’t just rock Youngjae’s world by that question alone.
“What? No, I don’t have any group.” Youngjae answers. Because, of course he doesn’t have any group. He hasn’t made that many friends in the past two months. His only friend is Han Jihoon from the dance club, but he is in a different class. So when the homeroom teacher announces that they will have a three day school trip and asks them to make a group of three to five students, Youngjae sits there frozen, not knowing what to do. Except, now there is Kim Dohoon who’s asking about his group situation.
“Do you want to join mine?” Dohoon’s smile is getting even bigger, showing teeth and all.
“Me? You want me to join your group?” The wheels behind Youngjae's eyes turning impossibly slowly. Like, this is better than being the one asking to be included in a group, right?
Youngjae follows up his assessment with a quiet, “Sure?”
Or, Youngjae mysteriously got included to The Four Prince's group for their school trip. Little does he know, Shin Junghwan is the one behind it all.

“We have a problem,” Junghwan announces. After a pause, he corrects. “I have a problem. With something. I need your opinion on it.”
“Huh,” Kyungmin finally registers the situation and wakes up fully, sensing something is distressing the oldest member. “Hyung, is everything okay? What happened?”
“I, no, let me think,” Junghwan lets his brain work and for some reason, he panics. “Look, it’s going to sound crazy, but hear me out. Okay?”
Not even a second later, Kyungmin replies. “Yes.”
“I think I have like, a crush,” Junghwan brushes his hair back from his eyes, feeling like he’s losing his mind, and then he announces. “On Youngjae.” Junghwan lets a huge breath out, the weight on his shoulders instantly gone.
One second, two seconds, Kyungmin only stares. And then he lifts his hands up and pinch Junghwan’s cheek hard.

It didn’t make sense for Shin Junghwan to be single, and that assumption was what kept Youngjae at a safe distance for an entire year, even as his feelings for him deepened little by little.
So he told himself he could live with it. He could stay by Junghwan’s side, just not too close. That Junghwan would continue to be someone unreachable, someone out of his league, someone slightly out of reach in a room full of people.
Just as Youngjae made peace with the idea that he would remain beside Junghwan, yet always separated by an invisible distance—that Junghwan would always remain out of reach for someone as ordinary as himself—he pulled a slip of paper from the secret santa box.

“Um…so I actually got the concept of the game wrong,” Youngjae admitted sheepishly.
“My present is really lame…it’s the tiniest box at the tree. It’s fine if you three play the game while I take it back, because it’s just a polaroid of me in a maid costume—”
And then, chaos erupted.
All three boys jumped to their feet at once, sprinting to the tree, tripping over each other, shouting, and crashing into one another as angry grunts and yells filled the room.
Youngjae let out a gasp as he watched the three boys fight it out for the tiniest box at the tree, screaming and kicking at each other.
