Summary
Etho’s knees knock against Gem’s, both sitting cross-legged beside the coffee table. She smiles at him, pasta sauce smeared around her lips and he remembers sitting at that crowded table back on Wylie Street, knees pressed against hers from the sheer amount of chairs pressed in against the cramped table, eating his cold spaghetti bolognese as he considered that it might not have been the worst place to end up.
It’s not spaghetti bolognese and Etho isn’t nine years old on Wylie Street. Gem’s not five and her teeth don’t have gaps in them- she’s grown into her big imploring eyes and there aren't any grazes on the skin of her knees.

It felt like a victory- like when they’d lead HEP to the fake base, or bought half the shopping district- it felt like they'd done it.
Then more pistons sounded and the ceiling opened up. It fell slowly- potion effects no doubt, grunting at them when it caught sight of the three of them standing there, grins wiped clean off their faces.

He looked older than Tommy, but not by much. There was blood splatter up his cheeks and frustration evident in the way he kept slamming the heel of his timberlands into the hood of a kia picanto.
The pink hair was a shock, parted down the centre and braid back in a length that dipped past the guy’s shoulders. He had a big red coat on, and a white shirt underneath- which honestly, stupid move. Never wear white in the apocalypse.

In the incredibly loud and painful beat of his own heart that slams against his chest and echoes loudly as blood rushes in his ears, Etho finds it in his mind to say sorry. For the pain and the damage, that this was his fault. His soulbond had been responsible and kept them safe. What kind of protector was he if he couldn’t do the same?
He’s lived many lives, played many servers and been a protector many times. Although, he always managed to do that through self-sacrifice. But this time around was a different story. There was someone else out there that had to feel all of this pain, hot and fiery in his veins, without even knowing why.

Must have been some weird sense of nostalgia, he reasoned on the first day he ventured out to the store on his way home. He never really made sense of why it became a habit or why he even started to begin with. Tommy's always been more of a creative type- scribbling in school books, rotting away in GCSE Art, planning elaborate stories in class, yet he’d never considered chalk a medium he would explore. But four months down the track, Tommy is wasting a significant amount of money each week and ruining all his favourite sweaters with chalk dust.
