Summary
Lance has an eating disorder.
This goes unnoticed by the team for a good second but not for forever. It's just a little extra training here, counting calories there and purging when he can. Its nothing serious, at least not serious to lance.
Being shot into space when you already have some issues isn't the best thing but Lance is sure if he can manage his weight, he can be beneficial to the team, no matter what it costs him.

Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

Summary
College campuses are a cesspool of awkward encounters. Some more unnerving than others, as Lance comes to find. He thinks it's important to note that in all those instances, Keith is there to witness them. Actually, that's unfair. Admittedly Keith happens be useful in getting him out of those situations. Affection, as it goes, grows stronger when you're constantly being "saved" by a protective rival – but mostly friend at this point.
Or 5 times Keith helped Lance out of a situation and the 1 time Lance tried to pay back the saves.
