Iris stared down at the two pink lines, her mouth agape. She couldn’t be pregnant, could she?
The one time she’d thrown caution to the wind and had a one-night stand.
“It only takes one time,” Grandma Esther’s voice sing-songs in her head.
This couldn’t possibly be. They’d used condoms.
“Keeping your legs planted firmly on the ground is the only form of contraception that works, young lady,” her grandmother’s disdainful tone continued to echo in her ears.

And it’s that caprice that scares her. It’s so easy to find herself wrapped up in him. She likes that fire in him and it’s there every time he lays claim to her. When he wraps his hands up in her hair as he’s riding her; when he whispers sweet nothings in her ear before they fall asleep; when he presses kisses to her mouth until she can’t breathe; when he coaxes smiles out of her on days she’d rather wallow in her feelings. She swears he holds the whole of her heart in his hands and she wants to want to follow him down any path he leads her on.
She can’t help thinking though, what if he takes her with him as he dives headfirst into heartbreak?

Iris glanced at the clock at the exact time it struck midnight. She sighed. Another late night at the office for her husband. It was beginning to become a commonplace occurrence. Him coming in after midnight tip-toeing through the apartment and gently pulling back the covers to not wake her.
If she didn’t know any better, she’d think he was avoiding her, or worse, being unfaithful. Maybe he was.
Her eyes felt heavy. Sleep usually eluded her until Barry was home. But today she’s too exhausted, too frustrated. A persistent ache between her ears that wouldn’t relent.
She couldn’t shake the anger that simmered beneath her fingertips. Boxing until her arms were sore barely scratched the surface of her irritation. There was a quiet part of her that knew her displeasure was justified. Still, she couldn’t get the words out. She couldn’t keep waiting for them to return to normal because, at this rate, they never were. They needed to talk.
Set a few weeks after the season 8 finale.
Iris deals with the lingering aftermath of her time sickness.
