But Jonathan was starting to come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t sure if he was ready for his mom and Hopper to be a thing quite yet. It probably wasn’t fair of him to think that. So, rather than ruin their afternoon, he’d decided to take his angst somewhere else and try to calm down.
All he wanted to do was find somewhere secluded to smoke and unwind.
Which was why it was so spectacularly frustrating to find Steve Harrington of all people up at the junkyard of all places.

“ABBA? For Jonathan?”
Dustin throws his hands up.
“Heaven forbid I want to buy him something cheerful instead of that moody stuff he usually listens to.”
El nods seriously.
“Will, maybe Dustin wanted Jonathan to be able to feel like a dancing queen.”

Summary
Although Dustin heard Steve stop walking, he didn’t notice anything was off until he spoke.
“Uh… Dustin?” Dustin turned. Steve was standing stock still, looking oddly pale in the steely darkness. “Something’s…” He stuck his hand under his shirt almost mechanically. It came away dark red. “...wrong.”
Then Steve, with his eyes glassy and faraway, was lifting up the hem of his shirt to reveal a lacy network of puncture wounds.

Summary
“What do you mean what happened?”
“I just…” Jonathan’s eyes flicked up past Steve at the sound of the backdoor creaking open. “Mom.”
Steve turned to see Mrs. Byers’ in the doorway with a glass of water and a bottle of something. Probably the painkillers she’d promised. She gave him a matching look of concern and confusion, although she was quicker to conceal it.
He started to feel hot and embarrassed with the reaction he was getting. It hadn’t been meant to slow anything down, let alone draw everyone’s eyes to his bare chest. He leaned down to grab his soaking wet shirt off the back steps, although it was really just an excuse to look down and away from everyone’s gazes.
Mrs. Byers’ put out a hand as if to tap him on the shoulder and then drew it back like she was worried about hurting him.
“Steve, honey, you can borrow one of Jonathan’s shirts."

Summary
As Nancy stands on the front porch of Jonathan’s house, breathing hard, she can actually hear the moment things return to normal. The sounds of the night return like a switch has been flicked, and she can’t believe she missed the sounds of the crickets. She starts to lower the gun, although her finger never leaves the trigger.
Somewhere to her right, Steve lets out a shaky breath.
“Uh, Jonathan? Is your mom dead?”

Summary
Prompt from tumblr: Thoughts on how Steve goes about living in a supernatural murder scene from winter 1984 until graduation? Especially while he and Nancy are still together?
Steve's response comes in stages of slow realization; an ever-growing pit of growing horror turned self-hatred that can never turn anything else, because what could he do about it. There was another dimension that was filled with monsters and one of them had killed a girl in that version of his pool: that was just a fact that he had to live with.
