    Zhou Zishu heard the electronic buzzer from the back room where he was working on a design for tomorrow’s flash drop-in. It was a small but comfortable lounge where the in-shop tattooists hung out, had a leggy leather couch, speakers, and a low mid-century table where the others ate their lunch, but he was currently using it for his drafts. The others all used tablets but he still worked on paper. He was old-school that way. He had learned calligraphy and watercolor before he’d started tattooing.

    Still, none of the in-shop artists had appointments on a Tuesday, so he dropped the pencil and wound his way to the front.

    There was a man at the front desk, tall, with bleached platinum hair like silk cascading down his back, leaning on the counter with his chin on his palm...
