    Summary

"Write again soon, stranger. I do look forward to your letters."

When Carson Shaw unintentionally takes a job typing letters for an advice columnist in a women's magazine, she is offered a glimpse into the lives of women from all across the country. Although her conservative boss refuses to respond to any problems which might be deemed inappropriate or immoral, Carson cannot help but connect with the readers who have poured out their hearts in hopes of being helped. The work brings some of her own fears to the fore and, with her husband away fighting in the war, she finds herself plagued with doubt over her marriage and her future.

When she secretly replies to some of the forbidden letters, she inadvertently begins a conversation with a fascinating stranger who might just change the course of her whole life...

    Summary

Greta forces herself to stand her ground, thinking idly that her unexpected lingering guest kind of reminds her of Maybelle: full of responsibility and seemingly looking for a moment away from it, unafraid, searching for a place to belong. It’s enough to give her the tiniest rush of affection. But Maybelle makes her think of Jo, and Jo makes her think of Ana, and Ana makes her think of Terri, and Terri makes her think of the church, and the convent, and Carson–

    God.

    Everything comes back to Carson.

At this point, Greta knows she shouldn’t think of her, but it’s hard.

(Or, Greta is now in New York for the off-season, and she's doing the whole seeing other people thing Carson joked about that night in the kitchen. It's not going well. But luckily, Carson decides to make her way to New York, to see Greta, to finally, finally make things right. It just might take a second to get there.)

    Summary

For so long, Carson believed that love came from wanting everything somebody else had that you didn’t. That love came from the fact that somebody might fill in those parts of you.

She convinces herself she loves Charlie because of it.

Charlie isn’t a girl. He is strong and handsome, that’s why he gets to play baseball with the boys. He’s not a girl, and he gets to do all of the things that Carson doesn’t. All of the things Carson wishes she could. He is all of the things Carson knows she is but doesn’t get to call herself.

    --

Greta is a woman. Carson knows this for sure, and she can’t feel this much for a woman. She can’t. But then, Greta smiles at her, takes her hand, pulls and says, here’s your destiny, and Carson thinks that maybe she is the kind of person who has a destiny after all. Destiny looks like red hair and dark eyes.

    Salvation.

(Or, Carson, growing up, gender envy, and falling in love. How Carson grows into the person she always thought she was inside. My take on a Carson gender exploration.)
