Summary
“Be safe,” she tells him, as she always does, and Peter simply smiles at her with his clothes already halfway kicked off, his suit on underneath. “And text me when you get home. Please.”
“Always,” he promises, their places now switched as she’s now sitting on the bed, him standing above her with his mask in hand. He plants a kiss on her temple, thumb gently caressing her cheek, before pulling back, the fondness all too evident in his eyes.
MJ likes that they never say goodbye as she watches him climb out of her window and swing into the distance. It’s a silent promise of sorts that he’ll come back to her.
She knows it’ll always be this way, hard and a little bit complicated with everything that he holds himself responsible for. But they’ve waited long enough to get to this point between them, and she thinks all of it is worth having to wait just a bit longer for him to come home each night.

At least May and Ben had time. At least they got to experience their anniversary once and then more than once because they were lucky enough to have a lifetime together.
Peter stares at his phone screen as if it’s mocking him, the heart with the notification and every memory it brings back.
But it’s fine.
He’s fine.

“Um, actually,” Peter clears his throat, out of practice in such a thing, a thing he hadn’t even been good at before he’d stumbled into a life of complete isolation. “I was hoping– Well. Hm.”
“Spit it out, I haven’t got all day,” Jameson scowls, but he leans back in his chair, chews on the end of a pencil, looking like he has just about all the time in the world.
Perks of being the boss, Peter supposes.
“I was just going to ask– for my payment this time around,” Peter clears his throat again, nothing to swallow except his own grief, “I was wondering if you’d mind– giving me a slot in the obit section and just taking the cost out of my earnings. Sir.”

Michelle breathes in deeply and exhales shakily, something he’s seen her do a sparse amount of times before. At that time, they were molding a friendship and she needed to hype herself up before telling something minimal about her own life. It pangs right beneath his ribs.
“I…my date stood me up.”
“Oh.”
For some reason his fists clench and anger rises up his throat, ready to fight the idiot who deceived his girlfriend—ex-girlfriend?—like that on one of the most special nights of high school life.
She scoffs, “Calm down. I can’t really remember who invited me anyway.”

She’s staring straight ahead with her mouth pulled into a frown but then she glances over in his direction. Their eyes lock and her lips twitch, and she turns her notebook around for him to see.
She hasn’t been writing—she’s been drawing. It’s a sketch of their teacher with a grimace on his face, glasses askew, and a lightning bolt above his head. And Peter can’t help but laugh a little at the accuracy, getting a slight smile out of her that could be pleased if he squints.
They get in trouble again and he thinks he should feel bad because it’s his fault, really. But the guilt doesn’t manifest in his head, and he can blame it all on the fact that he gets to spend the afternoon cleaning chalkboard erasers with her—where he learns that Michelle isn’t just pretty. She’s kind of perfect, too.
But that does make him wonder what she would think of the other voice in his head.

“Me?” She asks him in such a disbelieving tone that it almost seems like he offended her. But her expression wilts, drying up into nothing but blankness, something he hasn’t seen since sophomore year. “I’m fine. I mean, I’ve been here. We’ve all been here.”
“MJ—” His voice cracks a bit, shaky.
“Where else would we be?” Michelle smiles humorlessly, sleeves just barely reaching her fingertips as she picks at a loose thread on her shirt. “Not all of us can just pick up and leave. Or should I say run away.”

If he’s being honest, Peter would prefer not to find out. He likes to think this is it for them. At least, she’s it for him. She always has been because he can’t imagine being here with anyone else—not even a nameless, faceless person who, honestly, could offer him nothing that would measure up to being here with Michelle.
It’s not that he has standards or guidelines for who he does and doesn’t fall in love with. It’s just that he’s always had tunnel vision going one way, and it’s always ended with her. No exceptions.
