Rodney puts a small black velvet box in front of his face.
John takes it, his mind suddenly blank, and opens it. There’s a ring inside, obviously. A wedding ring.In his mind John smiles and winks at his friend, perhaps he even gives him an encouraging pat on the back. He tries to make out the right words, “it’s not that”, “Go get the girl”, “We’ll celebrate with a beer on the pier afterwards. Or tomorrow”. But in reality he can’t do any of that. His mouth is suddenly dry, the black velvet box still in his hand an uncomfortable weight he can’t let go of, and in the end the only thing that leaves his lips is “This is a mistake”.
