Summary
Inana Lavellan can't see most things - not in the waking world, anyway. The Fade is another matter, shining like a beacon just beyond the Veil. She loves the Fade, where everything is clear. Most clear of all is the spirit-teacher she has had for as long as she can remember. He taught her when she was still a child how to interact with spirits without fear. He shows her ancient dreams and memories. He talks with her about magic and philosophy. She has learned so much from him that it hardly even matters that their timelines seem to meet at random, and he doesn't always - or even often - remember who she is.
Imagine her surprise when her dreams lead her to the Conclave, compassion leads her to the burned-out temple in the wake of the explosion, necessity leads her to begin attempting to close the Breach - and she discovers that the spirit she has known all her life exists in the waking world as a man calling himself Solas.

Summary
A series of novellas that constitute one long story. The episodes follow a continuing plot but can be read separately, like an adventure-of-the-week type of thing.
The setting is Ancient Elvhenan, the Evanuris are fickle and cruel, the slavery is guised as worship, and lyrium is still blue. For now.
Solas is revered as the High’Protector of the People and the General of Mythal’s Army. In the past, the roles are reversed. Lavellan is the one who must hide her identity and plans—mostly because her plans sum up to kill the Evanuris—while Solas is firmly convinced that she is an agent sent by his enemies.
There is a lot of goading and teasing on her part and a lot of self-control on his.Depending on how slow you like your slow build, the best alternative places to start the series are:

Summary
This is a non-canon retelling of DA:I from beginning to end with far more emphasis on the relationships between the principal characters than on the specific quests from the game. The main plot points are the same, but who is involved, how things are resolved, and the resulting implications may be different.
Part 1 covered the part of the story that occurs in Haven and ends at the revelation of the existence of Skyhold.
Part 2 is unlikely to make much sense if you have not read Part 1 (there is a brief summary of Part 1 in the starting notes).
