Joyce’s old 1976 Ford Pinto definitely wasn’t spacious. But it was enough.
The trunk held a tessellation of boxes, luggage, and other instruments of the carrying kind.The drive to Montauk was more than long, but Joyce couldn’t complain about being in an enclosed space with hopper for a few hours. She couldn’t get over how much she loved that man. Everything about him deployed a type of happiness she never felt else wise.
Once she had finished up packing the last of their belongings, she brung herself to the car. Hopper was already waiting for her in there. “Hey.” He spoke with a smile.
“Hi,” Joyce said, her voice breathy and uncertain, almost.

Summary

He was too much for people. That was what he’d always been told, it was always the same. Ted, can you just stop being so much all the time? Ted, you need to calm down. Ted, I need space. He’d been too much for Michelle, even when he tried not to be, even when he’d given her space (over 4000 miles of it). He’d still been too much for her and in the end, he let her go and it damn near broke him. He was certain that he would always be too much for everyone and still never be enough.
