What’s so special about that?”David can’t even think of anything to say. But he feels better about Camile’s unspoken chiding for his failure to pay attention to romantic milestones. He runs his hands through his hair, fending off a bit of amused despair. “You didn’t notice more people using the stones than usual?”

There's no way this man doesn't see who he just brought home. If this even is his home. There's no way he doesn't see the nasal slits, and the gold eyes with slitted pupils. Michael may not look like his former kin any longer, may not even have their characteristic feeding slit, but he certainly doesn't look human, either.Telford sees the nonhuman features, of course. He’s seen weirder. He’s still recovering from the Ursini incident; they were nice enough to him, but they looked like bipedal turtles. If this guy’s an alien, he’s an astoundingly normal-looking one, probably capable of humanoid intelligence and speech, in which case, Telford can have a chat with him when they’re in secure quarters. And if he’s just a regular human, well, he should probably see a dermatologist and an eye doctor.

That was only bearable because of the chance I’d get to go do something exciting in another galaxy,” says Telford, with a little smile. “Couldn’t have made it through that without meditation.” That reminds him of something. He points at Rush. “Hey, you keep dodging my offers to teach you.”
“I don’t think my mind can shut down like that.”
“As opposed to mine?” says Telford, raising his eyebrows. “Or do you not want to be alone with yourself for too long?”

If she doesn’t know, she’s going to feel guilty that she can’t help. No-win.”Eli tucks his hands into his pockets, visibly discouraged. “Didn’t think of that.”
“Yeah, I can tell.” So that band-aid’s been ripped off. Next time Eli sees Chloe, he’ll be more considerate of his own behavior and how it comes across. I turn away from Eli, looking over Park’s shoulder as she quickly types something. Luckily, it’s technical notes on the ship’s design, not a message to the rest of the gossip group chat. Everyone always has one of those. I’m never in it.

The Icarus base crew seems to be completely affected by the love potion. It’s turned them all into drooling imbeciles about each other, in ways that I’d find personally amusing if it weren’t so bloody juvenile. The only other one with enough of a cool head to maintain order is Colonel Telford. TJ wanted to help us develop an antidote, but she’s rather incapacitated by mooning over Colonel Young. And so, it’s just David and I, the only sane men amid the madness. Relatively speaking.
We’re proceeding based on David’s theory that his own immunity could be transferred to the others to neutralize the love potion effects, rather like that one offworld incident with Scott and Chloe. I haven’t a clue where he got that idea -- and altruism is not a renowned David Telford trait -- but we’re trying.Series

Right?” He looks at David and hesitates. “...Right?”“You’re telling me you’re not excited about the possibility of getting your coworker a gift they’re going to hate?” David stirs his decaf coffee. “No way.”
Everett breathes a sigh of relief. Even after all this time, he still cares about David’s approval and opinion. That’s a difference between them right there. David doesn’t care about anyone’s approval, except for his own exactingly high standards. Trouble is, he holds everyone else to those standards, too.

Chloe smiles again, throws her head back a bit, suddenly looking very young, like a girl at a concert, facing up at a blue sky with a shining sun. She looks back down, meeting his eyes, and says fondly:
“Look at the two of us. More than one person now, doubles, with our own doppelgangers inside us, unsure which of the two are the ‘real’ us. But maybe it’s both? We have to live this way, after all, and trying to get back to a previous self that doesn’t exist any more won’t do us any good.”
She turns serious, her hands stilling suddenly, and says with a great weight behind it:
“You’re still you, Rush.”
“There you go,” says Rush, approvingly. He’s proud of her, and it shows. Rush has a habit of thinking he can conceal his visible emotions. He really can’t. “It’s quite incredible how presenting people with a situation similar to their own will help them draw the right conclusions. Then, they realize that those answers apply to themselves, too.” He raises his eyebrows. “Doesn’t always work, to say the least, but I had a feeling it might do the trick here.”
