Summary
Maverick’s head snaps in his direction as he approaches. “Ice!” he exclaims, visibly lighting up, that goddamn grin plastered across his face.
“Maverick,” Ice replies, even as ever. “Good to see you.”
“I’m glad I could make it to Slider’s Summer Solstice Soirée. And between us,” he leans in conspirationally, “I didn’t know he even knew that word.”
The year is 1993, and Slider is hosting a bonfire for friends and family. Ice and Maverick have been secretly hooking up for the past few years, and now that Maverick's back from deployment, they're in the same place at the same time once more.

The P-51 taxis past the crowd on its way to the end of the runway as the tanker and the other jets come in to land, and Halle can see the pilot waving from the cockpit. The older man standing next to her gives a blinding smile and a shy wave back. Halle silently wonders what their story is, not that she’ll ask; she can simply observe now and theorize with Tait later.
The younger man elbows the other. “He’s waving at you, Ice.”
“He’s waving to the crowd,” the older man—Ice—corrects.
“No, he’s definitely waving to you in particular.”

That year, his first year in the Academy, Tom experiences his first Thanksgiving.
It might not be the first Thanksgiving he’s ever celebrated, but the first real Thanksgiving for sure.
Gone is the stiff formal attire, the stilted conversations, the frozen green beans and dry store-bought turkey, and the people who only know him as his father’s son.
