“So?” It’s Viktor’s turn to slam his palm on the table. The wood cracks beneath it; across the bar, Vander looks up from his table, Silco beside him. “It doesn’t matter, he’s still a traitorous idiot. He still fucked with my head.” He jabs a finger against his temple hard enough to hurt. “If he’s up here, Sevika, it’s because he forced it. Biology is irrelevant, he’ll never be my mate.”

With Piltover and Noxus at war, both sides know securing Zaun is integral to coming out on top. Viktor becomes an integral figure in deciding how the war will end. Jayce hopes to convince him to fight on Piltovers side - if he can get Viktor to talk to him.

Summary
No one paid much attention when a young man from the Undercity was expelled from Piltover Academy after having been found to have forged his enrollment.
Significantly more notice is paid five years later, however, when one Jayce Talis is expelled after his trial by the Piltover Council. In this world, there is no keen-eyed assistant to the Dean to read through his notebook and to talk him off the ledge—but something draws him towards Zaun, where he gets his ass kicked and is rescued by an unusual man. Against all odds, Jayce manages to find Viktor anyways.

“Professor?” A voice calls, and Jayce has about two seconds to feel the hot little sting of hurt that he’s not the only one working with Heimerdinger after all, when Viktor steps fully into view, and Jayce catches sight of him.

It takes him a moment and another careful look to be certain, but—yes, it’s got a more subtle variation on the Academy staff bot uniform, white and muted browns, and the College of Sciences insignia pinned to the breast of its waistcoat, and where its shirtsleeves are rolled up to its elbows, Jayce can see the fine, thin lines running up its forearms, the divots in the synthskin showing where the metal plating must connect below.

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?
