“What?” said Warlock.
“Just promise me,” said Nanny.
“I promise.”
“Good,” she’d said, “Now, if you ever—and I mean ever find yourself in a situation like this again—one that seems scary, or one where any normal person would be in danger—I need you to pray. Pray to Aziraphale or to Crowley to come and get you.”
“Who’s that?” asked Warlock.
“Just promise me,” insisted Nanny in a voice like iron, “Aziraphale and Crowley. Can you repeat those names?”
“Y—yeah. Azif—Aziraphale and Crowley.”

Onscreen, the interviewer gave a blinding smile and then said, “Mr. Dowling, since I have the privilege of being the first to interview you, I get to ask— what inspired you to write your novel?”
“I had a bit of an odd childhood,” Warlock said slowly, his head tilted slightly. “While I was living here I had a nanny who took care of me for a few years, and she… inspired a bit about Ms. Cassandra in my novel. Likewise, inspiration for Mr. Felix came from my family’s gardener when I was a kid.” His lips twitched into a tiny, fond smile. “They were a bit of an odd pair, Nanny Ash and Brother Francis, but they had a pretty big impact on me. I guess you could say a little of the novel was inspired by what I wish my childhood could have been like— just a bit special and fantastical.”
The TV screen went black, and Crowley looked down at his fingers, frozen in a snap. He had miracled the news off without even realizing.
Crowley leaned back against the couch and then ran a hand over his face. “Bloody fucking hell,” he whispered.
[Warlock writes a book, and reunites with some old friends]

He was an opening act, sometimes, or just the weird vagrant at sound check. He’d show up, connect his guitar, and strum out those chords, make the air quake with the shape of what he’d lost. Those chords felt like the closest thing to memory he had left, the nearest thing to truth in the shattered shambles of his life.
He was mid-performance when the Doctor realised he’d once again locked eyes with the brunette, her wide brown eyes calling to him from out of the crowd. And he wondered, in the fleeting moment their gazes met and held, if she was the only one who understood what the melody really meant, who might understand the carved-out pain inside him, the ache that not even the music could accurately convey.

Rory didn’t regret staying, he swore on his life he would never ever regret that, but the reality of it was sinking in: he’d just signed up for two thousand years of solo guard duty. Some rough mental arithmetic told him that was about 730,000 days, give or take. He kind of wished he hadn’t tried to work that out.
