It was done, he told himself. Whatever change had occurred in the timeline, it was already in the past, irreversible as any other event. And after all, he’d known Marty for only a week. It was irrational to think of him as a friend. It was wildly irrational, to mourn something that had never existed.
After hearing about the birth of the McFly family's second daughter, Doc Brown can only conclude that the worst has happened and that Marty has somehow been erased from time. He resigns himself to being alone, but when he crosses paths with the new McFly kid he can't help but make a friend.

Herbert always says it takes too long to write things down. For Christmas, he bought Dan a recorder and a stack of cassettes. He said that it’s “to foster good note-taking habits.” That it’s more personal. That it’s harder for people to steal work recorded this way, because a voice is as good as a fingerprint.
Herbert has a series of them, cassettes tapes tracking the changes in his voice.

“You came back?” Herbert said, voice soft.
Dan just nodded slightly. A lump rose in Dan’s throat. Herbert’s response had ripped a small tear in Dan’s heart. He’d never seen West look so…lost. So dazed and unguarded. Uncertainty replaced the typically acute stare behind those thick lenses. Dan tenderly reached for Herbert’s trembling hand. Finally holding onto the hand he regretted letting go of. He expected Herbert to flinch at his touch. Instead, Herbert gripped Dan’s hand like it was the only thing tethering him to reality.
Basically: Herbert dies in the Miskatonic Massacre and Dan re-animates him, hurt/comfort ensues.
