“Don’t go up there.”
His voice was cold. Controlled. Barely.
She stood in front of him, armor half-clasped, sword slung over her back, jaw tight with defiance.
“I’m your general, Jiang Wanyin. Not your wife when we're on the battlefield.”
Her words sliced sharper than Zidian ever could.
He stepped forward. “You are both. And if you have any sense left, you’ll stay back and command from the second line like I ordered.”
“I have sense enough to know that you’re walking into a slaughter.” Her eyes burned, unblinking. “And I will not—cannot—watch you die.”
“You think I can stomach watching you die?” he growled.
They stood there, two blades unsheathed — not steel, but pride, fear, and something worse: love choking on silence.
She opened her mouth, hesitated. Something flickered behind her eyes. But instead of saying what she was about to… she closed her mouth and looked away.
“Fine,” she said tightly. “If we both survive, we can fight again later.”
He didn’t say it. The thing he wanted to say. The thing that lodged itself behind his teeth.
So instead he turned, and she turned, and neither of them knew that was the last time they would speak.

Summary
Chu Wanning wants to save others, even if he can’t save himself. But that doesn’t mean others don’t want to save him. His shizun Mo Ran, for example, who found him half-frozen in the snow when he fled from the people he thought wanted to save others but were lying all along. Mo Ran, his mom, and the rest of Sisheng Peak give Chu Wanning a fire and a light and a home, and he thinks he might be able to save himself after all.
And for these people, he’d do anything. Even if it means abandoning that very hope for salvation.
(Even if it means forgetting the sword riding lessons and the clam chowder and even why he can’t bear to take off that red pendant clasped so tightly around his neck.)

“What would you do if you could have him back?” Nie Huaisang asked him, a bit too seriously as he leaned forward.
“There is no way for a dead cultivator to return,” Jiang Cheng scoffed, not even willing to entertain the thought.
“Perhaps, perhaps not,” Nie Huaisang shrugged, “Even if he came back, that wouldn’t do much to help, would it? Your sister is still gone. His reputation still damaged.”
“Stop speaking in riddles,” Jiang Wanyin growled, “What did you come here for, Nie Huaisang?”
“I asked you what you would do for your brother back,” Nie Huaisang started, “I would do anything to have mine back, Jiang Wanyin. And I’m here to offer you that same choice. Because our brothers’ deaths never should have happened. They happened because of schemes and plots. They happened because of lies and deception. Your brother was made to be a villain and was led to his death because he was too powerful. Mine was murdered because he stood in the way of Jin Guangshan.”
There's nothing Jiang Cheng wouldn't do to have his siblings back. And when Nie Huaisang comes to him with a proposal to save them by changing everything, he doesn't even hesitate to agree.

Summary
Mu Qingfang never wanted to be some sort of saviour. He was never that type of person, the selfless and generous kind. And yet, he's stuck being the peak lord of Qian Cao after his shizun tricked him.
He hates a lot of things. The sect, for example. His shizun, definitely. The rain, and the very unwanted plot-twist in his life. But in dull repetitions, he finds colour, despite being bound to being the 'saviour' of someone he never really cared about.
But how many times must one live their life before they can get it right? (And how long can one keep their sanity and rationality in the face of time and love?)
