    The new boy is skittish, knees wobbly like that of a newly born deer, doe-eyes flitting unsurely between the various smiling faces in front of him. He dresses in soft colors, with overalls the color of ripe pears and a shirt underneath sharing the same hue as the foliage cusping their picnic blanket. His hair is blonde, a dollop of butter amongst heads of black and brown, and his smile holds something both excited and nervous, like a anxious bud on the verge of blossoming.

    He sits with them, laughs at Kel’s jokes, nods sagely at Mari’s advice, and shares nudges with Audrey – but not before turning to Sunny and whispering, “Hi.”

    “Hi,” Sunny says, wishing his voice weren’t so blank, but also a little grateful, too, that awe doesn’t bleed into his words.
