Summary
Irkens, both defective and not, are simultaneously defenders, victims, and profiteers of the system than defines them. They will defend it until their throats are raw, then they will go home and despair over tight funds, drink until they can’t remember their names, and cry for want of being a Vortian. But the cries of a populace’s minority— even if said minority includes someone unfathomably powerful— mean nothing in the face of a broken system.
And the system doesn’t take kindly to being fixed.
There existed a sanctuary for defects, in a limbo of precarious safety, for if the Empire ever became aware of them, all its residents will surely be executed. But when the planet’s safety is ensured, even with discovery, it will cause the very foundation of the Empire to crack under itself. The lives of Irkens from all reaches of the galaxies will dramatically change, with no hope of return.
And it’s all Red’s fault.
