Another stretch of silence settles. Comfortable. Safe. And maybe that’s why Shane says it. Because he’s tired. Because Ilya’s hand is still moving gently through his hair. Because this apartment is the only place in the world where he sometimes forgets to keep things locked behind his teeth.
“The director said my face looked too full on camera today.”
The words leave him absentmindedly, quiet enough to almost disappear beneath the sound of rain. But the hand in his hair stops immediately. And Shane realizes, far too late, that he shouldn’t have said anything at all. For the silence that follows feels wrong instantly. Not quiet. Not comfortable. Sharp.
Shane feels Ilya go still beneath him, every trace of sleepiness gone in the span of a second. The hand resting at the back of his neck tightens slightly before slipping away altogether.
“What?” Ilya asks.
