"By the third time the regular comes in, Michelle has his coffee order memorized.
He’s a nice guy, unassuming and polite, always stammering to string more than two words together at a time. He introduces himself every time he comes in, even though Michelle is competent enough to remember someone’s name after the first time. She doesn’t think he does it on purpose though, just as a way to fill the space between them when he places an order.
“I’m Peter,” he sputters out. “Peter Parker.” He always seems like he wants to say something else, something more, his sentences spiraling and trailing off, but he stops himself every time, resigning himself to his normal cup of coffee."

If Cameron’s there, or at the apartment Rupert let slip he’s rented for her in the city. If he’ll speak to her in that careful, mild way he’s adopted as of late, as if she’s a constituent and not someone who knows what his mouth tastes like.
Feeling tipsy and a little reckless, Taggie picks up the receiver.

She's in the palm of his hand but it's eyes she can't look away from. Ravenous, greedy and delighted, even slightly pitying. As if it's perfectly understandable for her to be here, like this, in this state. As if it wasn't a surprise truly to find her here in the pantry after the pavlova course with her hand up her own skirt.
