Summary
Their third and final year at Aoba Jousai has come to an end, and the guys decide to go to the beach the day after graduation.
That day, the ocean water is salty, the watermelon is sweet, and the people are sweeter.

“You seem—sad.” Was that the right word? Others sprang to mind: desperate, lonely, anxious.
Tooru looked away. “Are you going to make me say it?”
“Say what?”
Tooru folded his arms, sighed. “I missed you, of course.”
Hajime swallowed.
“No need to look that way. I told you, I’m not one of your macho man buddies. I’m allowed to say stuff like that without being embarrassed—”
“You’re being ridiculous,” Hajime complained. “No need to be so defensive. I’ve missed you too.”
“Oh?” Tooru seemed to get a little of his own back, leaning forward on his elbows. “What about me did you miss?”
((Going to separate universities, Hajime and Tooru learn the true meaning of "distance makes the heart grow fonder"))

Summary
The concept is a bit foreign. Sure, Oikawa’s had girlfriends before, but all of them have approached him first. If a girl at school was particularly sweet or pretty or had a nice smile or knew a passing thing about volleyball, he might accept if (when—more like) they confessed to him, and then he’d be a perfectly polite, perfectly neglectful, perfectly distracted boyfriend for three or so weeks until they got sick of him. It’s routine for him, and by extension routine for Hajime.
But Oikawa liking someone is new. Oikawa thinking about someone in his free time—doodling little hearts in his notebook and staring wistfully as they pass by in the hallway and carefully trying to win their affections—it makes something weird twist in Hajime’s stomach. It doesn’t feel right.

The rest of him, though, is a different story; his hands are firm on each side of Hajime’s face before they skim down his neck, fingers tracing over his skin like he wants to memorize him. His nose sticks sharply into Hajime’s cheek. He presses Hajime into the wall of the house behind them, caging him in with his long legs.

Summary
During Hajime’s third year in California, Oikawa pays him a surprise visit in the middle of December. He comes unannounced, like a storm of roaring happiness and laughter and smart-ass remarks.
When he returns to San Juan, behind him he leaves a probably condemned ficus bonsai (no matter what Hajime says), an endless string of amazing moments, and alarmingly low levels of mustard for the rest of the Irvine population.
That, and one more thing.
(This might be the end of Hajime’s sanity)

He tries not to think about how hard it’ll be once Oikawa leaves and his scent lingers on his bedsheets; [...] about how hard it’ll be walking into the library and sit down at his favorite table after learning how Oikawa looks sitting there, hair like copper under the bright fluorescent lights and smart eyes paying way more attention to Hajime’s notes than Hajime had paid that day.
Most of all he tries not to think about how hard Oikawa is already making it, interlacing his quickly warming feet with Hajime’s and mumbling a quiet good night into the pillow.

A soulmate is a person you yearn nothing short of a lifetime with, because anything less is too brief, too temporary, too obsolete.

Sometimes Hajime forgets he’s best friends with an absolute asshole.
“Iwaizumi loves the Goat in this scene,” Oikawa lies cheerfully, turning his head slightly so he can meet Hajime’s eyes. The corners of his lips are subtly but surely quirking upwards, and his expression is something Hajime finds himself wanting to punch the more he looks at it. “Iwaizumi likes to yodel.” [...]
(This is how Oikawa dies—here, in front of the class, after Hajime has flung his cackling frame out the window and over the soccer field that sits below. Where he lands is none of Hajime’s concern. Hopefully, though, in a ditch.)

"Hold on," Mike asked, "you made Donna come into work in the middle of a blizzard?"
"I don't make Donna do anything. Haven't you learned by now?" Harvey gave Mike a mean little smile, but under that was relief for anyone to see. "You, I can make come into the office in a blizzard."

He was a little behind and to the right of Mike, closer to the windows. He was looking at Mike while Mike looked at Harvey's reflection.
Harvey was looking at him and Mike remembered how Rachel had called it "eating you up with his eyes at twenty paces." His face was relaxed as it usually was not, his mouth soft as it usually was not. He brought his jaw forward a little, as if he had a bit of his bottom lip between his teeth and was worrying it absently. His forehead was smooth, unbothered. He was thinking about something he'd thought about before, and would think about again, familiar as the shape of his own hand, unchanging. He was looking directly at Mike's face with a hunger not desperate but steady, patient, persistent.

“I had it under control,” he mutters but makes no move to pull free because Oikawa had been getting like this a lot lately, taking care of him when Hajime let his guard down for too long and it was weird because it was always Hajime looking after Oikawa but it was also –
It was also sort of nice.
Oikawa pulls back the covers on the bed in one fluid movement and bundles Hajime in like he’s not perfectly capable of doing it himself. Hajime obliges him though with a certain amount of humor, because it’s been a long time since somebody fluffed his pillows for him and tucked him in like this.

He reaches out for a spoon with his right arm, and his father stops him with a light hand to his wrist. Wakatoshi looks up into kind, hazel eyes and retracts.
Here, his father says, taking the spoon himself and pressing it, gentle, to Wakatoshi’s left hand. His mother’s gaze is elsewhere, fixed on the bursting fountain and the sprawling purple near it.
Wakatoshi takes the spoon. With his left hand, he digs out a pre-cut orange cube from the mango’s flesh. When he brings it to his mouth, his eyes widen.

Oikawa kneels over him, hands planted in the moss beside his ears, pupils blown, trembling slightly with the thrill. A long, thick string of bloodied saliva drips from Oikawa’s chin and splatters on Iwaizumi’s throat. The vampire’s eyes track the crimson smear, idly noting that if not for the binding spell, nothing would stop him from tearing into Iwaizumi’s throat. The mage is beautiful. Oikawa wants to crush him. Faintly, he realizes something about the mage’s blood is likely the reason for this mania.
"I'll kill you," Oikawa whispers.

Summary
When he was very young Tooru crawled in through his window. There were horns growing out of his head, his fingertips were talons, the skin of his hands and feet impossibly black. He was crying.
“Please don’t tell. Please don’t tell.”
Outside, dragons and their knights hunted for the invading demon. But Tooru was his best friend, so Hajime never told. So a demon grew up among men in the kingdom of Aoba Johsai, protected and loved and powers growing ever unchecked. Until he did not need protection anymore. Until it seemed there was nothing that could be protected from him.
(More concisely - child Iwachan thinks he can help his weird best friend live a normal life but he only grows more unmanageable; over time he sees that he cannot manage Demon King Oikawa)

Across all things, he said,You’re welcome, for saving you from execution, I did it for you.
Tooru understood. He nuzzled against him more. His tongue slipped through his lips and lapped at Hajime’s exposed shoulder blade. His tongue was smooth, then rough, then smooth. He licked like a cub would. Tha—nk Y—o—u, T—h—a—
Hajime felt the little catlike affection from that rough tongue and limply accepted it.

There are only two things that have ever broken Oikawa Tooru’s heart. Iwa-chan would say Tooru has no heart to break, but that’s simply untrue.
The first is volleyball, that old flame. The second is his idiot best friend.
Iwa-chan's leaving Japan. Tooru's not sure he can forgive him, but he's not going to admit his long-held feelings, either. A trip to Miyajima complicates everything.

Tooru is a little hurt that Iwa-chan isn’t even slightly curious about what he wrote. In a flash of brattiness he flips over Iwa-chan’s ema, sees 心願成就 in big block letters because Iwa-chan is classic and boring like that. It takes Tooru a moment to see in much smaller writing Oikawa—Nationals, beneath it.

Bookmarker's Notes
It’s absolutely ridiculous, but that’s because Iwaizumi doesn’t have a window right into Oikawa’s brain. He can’t see how roughly half of Oikawa’s thoughts swirl in a smitten cloud around a glorified image of Iwaizumi, the remainder being of volleyball, food, and outer space. If he’s insecure, it’s because Oikawa has assumed that he was being more attentive than he actually was. He’s been negligent. Which is, frankly, inexcusable.

"Why do people even like summer so much?" Tooru muses, “It’d be much less boring if I could play volleyball, but it’s so hot I’d definitely die if I tried. And what would this world do without me?"
"It'd be a better place, for one."
"What would you do without me?"
Hajime takes too long to reply as he contemplates this.
"The correct answer is: 'live the rest of my life wallowing in misery, yearning for my other half'."
"I think the correct answer is that I'd finally have normal blood pressure."

See, the thing is, Iwaizumi Hajime is not a coward. So when Oikawa Tooru, bane of Iwaizumi Hajime’s existence, had very rudely flung open his bedroom door and proclaimed that he was beating Hajime 859 – 857 at holding his breath underwater, Hajime had tossed his copy of the day’s Sankei Sports on the floor and stood with a challenge in his teeth.

“Mean, Iwa-chan!” Tooru would complain, snatching his hand back to shove huffily at the gate. But an hour later, he’d abandon his water gun to thrust his hand at Hajime in silent demand. Hajime would predict a nosebleed during the next day’s sleepover, or a worldwide shortage of milk bread in twenty years, and Tooru would splash and splash in indignation. Hajime would go back to floating facedown in the water to freak Tooru out, and they’d go home after the pool lights had flickered on and lit their faces a pale, luminous blue like the aliens in the cartoons Tooru religiously taped.
*
And the thing is, Hajime wants to learn. He wants to learn how to furnish his own grown-up life with secondhand chairs and mismatched hangers and crumpled up postcards and still come back to this. To Tooru. They’d always been Oikawa-and-Iwaizumi, one hyphenated creature tumbling over itself from grade school to Aoba Johsai to wherever the hell they’re going next. Aun no kokyu. Hand in waiting hand.
