“My child, I suppose,” Aventurine said. The phrasing bothered him the second it had escaped his mouth. My child, he had said. My. As if ownership of the doll came naturally to him. As if he wasn't disgusted by it.

Summary
The Ten Stonehearts of the IPC's Strategic Investment Department aren't all that close - at least, not according to the Pier Point rumour mill or interastral tabloids. Emotional connections between them would only be a weakness in their... riskier transactions, so it works out nicely that the best thing you can really say about any of their relationships is that they're professional and cordial.
