    Summary

His skin pulls tight, and a vague ripple wanders down his spine, an urge to shift and protect searing as he stuffs it down and reaches in with two blood-slicked palms.

Dry patches of soft down catches and sticks to his hands, but more hot crimson also coats them as he gently lifts the pup out from beneath entrails.

A girl, judging by her scent.

Earthy, green - maybe a little spiced.

It’s hard to tell with so much of her blood intermingled with what he thinks must be her mama's and her other fallen packmate.

Distantly, he feels Tess come to hover behind him, her hand now braced firmly on the same shoulder she’d been tender with only minutes ago. “Is it still alive?” Her voice shakes and her scent shifts, turning startled and unsure.

The low whine and broken whimper that whistles out of the pup as he clears the protective curve of the two dead wolves says yes.

The pained twist and wiggle as she pants says that she may not be for long.

    Christ almighty she’s little.

Ain’t supposed to shift this young, shouldn't be able to.

Joel and Tess find Ellie in the carnage of her pack. Post outbreak, a wolf pup is rare thing, something to be protected at all costs.

    Summary

“Oh, our Ellie-girl is growin’ up,” Tommy coos, and Ellie kicks him under the table. He winces, but that smug smile doesn’t wipe off his face, so she kicks him again, a little harder.

“Ellie, stop that,” Joel says, not even looking but knowing exactly what sort of a menace she’s being.

“He’ll be fine,” Maria snorts. “Ellie’s got tiny feet.”

“Hey!” Ellie cries out, indignant. Just for that, she kicks Tommy a third time.

    Summary

Ellie brings home a wolf pup. Joel is less surprised by this than you might think.

Doesn't mean he's pleased about it.

The one in which Joel thinks he knows what's going on, but he really really doesn't.

    Summary

When Sarah Miller was 14 she caught a bullet in her stomach. The piercing metal had felt like fire and ice taking up permanent residence in her core, reducing the surrounding world to nothing but a blurry distraction—or as she explained it to anyone who got close enough to ask about the puckered, pale scar between her hip bones, it had hurt like a bitch.

Or: Tommy pulls Joel away from Sarah before she fully bleeds out and it makes all the difference, leading to a very different confrontation in the Salt Lake City O.R.

    Summary

Tess is a powerful underworld figure, brokering information. When an internal threat has her questioning the loyalties of those closest, she must enlist the help of someone who has just as much to lose as she does. A bodyguard/boss AU set in the 1970s.

His fingertips brushed through the curtain of hair hanging to her waist. Dressing like a goddamn hippie with motivations that were resolutely square. A capitalist muckety-muck playing dress-ups with the beautiful people. Tess had some goddamn nerve and he wanted every last piece of her, Duke’s warnings be damned.

Because Duke was right – he’d never met anyone like her before. And maybe by getting a little closer he could unravel the enigma, because he’d meant what he’d told Duke – one woman was, essentially, the same as another. There were a finite number of parts people could play. And she was just playing one of them, concealing it a little better than most.

Tess whispered again in his ear: “You answer to me, now.”
