“Phainon, I can’t hold back anymore,” Mydei rasps out, his voice conveying the severity of the hunger he feels.
“I never asked you to.” The frustration in the oryx’s voice is evident, but he doesn’t let it linger, smoothly shifting into a more charming tone. “Give in, Mydei. Give in, and give it all to me—I’m the only one who can handle all of you and your desires at its fiercest. Isn’t that one of the many reasons why you chose me as your mate?”
With those words, the last fragile thread of the rut-stricken alpha’s restraint finally snaps. He surges forward with a snarl, pinning his omega down by the wrists. Phainon whimpered softly beneath him, arching instinctively, offering everything.
The scent of slick rushed up into the air—warm, desperate, utterly submissive—and Mydei’s mouth watered with need.

The room grew steadily warmer as the night wore on. Or perhaps that was simply the alcohol. Phainon wasn’t entirely certain, because the thought that it might be their close proximity made him want to do something that could ruin their friendship—like kiss Mydei’s soft lips, perhaps. He wasn’t entirely sure when that realization had started to settle in, only that it was now impossible to ignore. Mydei’s presence beside him felt closer than it should have, every small movement drawing Phainon’s attention in a way that made his thoughts blur at the edges. And worse, there were moments—quiet, unguarded moments—when Phainon caught himself thinking far too carefully about things he absolutely should not be thinking about, like the plushness of Mydei’s lips, or how easily one wrong choice could turn everything they had into something neither of them knew how to recover from.

He could not return to Aedes Elysiae empty-handed. He could not handle Cyrene’s eyes, filled with hope and uncertainty, only to announce their doom. Phainon could not bear returning only to tell his beloved people to sit and wait for their slaughter; to watch as their beautiful village, populated by the golden wheat fields, the shimmering blue ocean, and the most generous and loving of people, was destroyed. As the golden wheat turned to red, the ocean turned grey with pollution, and silence, as those people drew their last breaths, clouded Aedes Elysiae like fog forever.
“Please,” Phainon whispered, a single tear running down his cheek, as his voice broke. “I’ll do anything.”
Aedes Elysiae is at war; on the brink of extinction. As their last hope, the Elysiaens send Phainon to supplicate before the Great Titan of Strife, where something precious must be given to save something precious.
