In the tangle of her thoughts, Willow almost missed it—a shadow in the corner of her vision, its lines drawn taut, its form stock-still. A spell circle was at her fingertips before she could even register the white-hot fear suddenly surging through her chest. She tiptoed towards it, not wanting to give away her position, and paused as the shape came into focus.
There, standing with his back to her and watching the rain fall, was Hunter. He was breathing oddly, like his chest was only rising for a third of the breaths he should’ve been taking; Willow watched as he swayed on the spot like a leaf quivering on the branch.
Her muffled tread grew louder, not wanting to startle him. She let the spell fall away as she approached.
“Hunter?”
