Summary
This story is simple. It happened in four moments. Prologue: a boy drives a car off of a cliff despite the wishes of his stepfather. Prologue: another boy punches someone in the face after an insult about his mother. Prologue: the two boys, now men, meet in a hearing room (Enlighten me again, the cadet says). Prologue: the two men hate each other until the precise moment that they don’t.
This story is simple. It happened in one moment. Epilogue: perhaps they never hated each other at all.
But this story, in four moments or in just one, has been told before. Those moments no longer matter. What matters is the fact that the two of them have finally found each other, at least in this universe. What matters is the fact that the Jim Kirk on Delta Vega should never have been surprised- of course, Vulcans feel. What matters is the only thing that’s ever mattered: what happens next.

Summary
It’s the same as when he sat in waiting rooms as a child with a suffocating sense of something on the edge of going wrong. Only adult logic doesn’t help because he can put names to what he fears, and he knows that the scale of the panic isn’t that far off the mark. There are so many ways to break somebody beyond repair.
