Summary
There were many things about Shane's upbringing in Canada that Ilya found hard to understand. Like why he insisted on hiking into the brush to find the "perfect" marshmallow sticks for a bonfire. To Ilya, it seemed like a lot of unnecessary effort and a high risk of mosquito bites when they could just buy a pack of skewers and be done with it.
But, like with everything that came with Shane Hollander, Ilya had learned to love it.
And now here he was, years later, the one leading Shane and their kids through the woods behind the cottage on this warm summer evening.

“Ilya, honey, you weren’t even there,” Yuna said.
“I left him at the bar,” Ilya said. “I left early to take care of Anya. Hayden was there since we played Montreal, and I told Shane to stay so he could spend time with his friend.”
“Shane’s an adult. He’s a professional hockey player. You left your perfectly capable husband at a bar. There’s no way you could have known this would happen. Don’t even start to let yourself feel guilty about this.”

Shane looks up at him, mouth open around a question that doesn’t come right away.
“What are you- why are you here?” he asks finally.
Ilya frowns now. He knows it’s a risk but he didn’t think Shane would be unhappy he was here. Not after…not now.
“I wanted to check on you,” Ilya tries again, voice careful. “I need to leave soon but-”
But I needed to see you.
I needed to watch you breathing with my own two eyes.
I needed to hold your hand.
“I’m- you were at the game?” Shane asks after a beat, uncertainty colouring his features. “Were we playing against each other?”

Summary
Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.
