Summary
Childe got rid of his mark long ago. He doesn't care about fate, about soulmates, about how the stars kind of know who your soul might find peace with. Most people need peace while Childe needs chaos: one can't truly fight back when one's soul is not on constant alert.
Now that he urgently needs to get his mark back because of those new snezhnayan bills, his best option is to ask an old friend from Liyue for some guidance and trust the process—Zhongli's presence has always been quite grounding for him anyway.

“Tartaglia, you are being reassigned.”
Excitement pumps through Childe’s veins as the words are uttered, his casual smile widening into an ecstatic grin. For it to be the Tsaritsa passing this mission along to him directly rather than Pierro– it must be high-stakes.
“You will be going to Liyue,” she says, “to enter a courtship with Rex Lapis.”
What?
Childe swallows harshly, his tongue feeling thick in his mouth.
“Your Majesty, I believe there may be a misunderstanding.”
More like an impossibly large oversight to this whole plan. “Rex Lapis and I… we are not on the best of terms, at the moment.” That’s putting it lightly, though saying as much to his Queen feels immensely childish, and shame surely paints his face a burning red hue. “I do not think he would be pleased to receive me.”
Her expression does not change, and she only answers him with patience. “On the contrary, he has specifically requested you.”

Summary
The truth is that Childe has a secret. The truth is that Childe doesn’t remember much of his time in Liyue. He remembers the boring, seemingly endless paperwork, remembers collecting the sigils of permission that became a crucial part of his plan, remembers the fall of the Geo Archon at the Rite of Descension, summoning the Overlord of Vortex, fighting Lumine at the Golden House, and at the end of it all, finding out that he had been one-upped by Signora, the eighth harbinger.
What he doesn’t remember, however, is everything outside of that. He doesn’t remember how he spent his leisure time in Liyue, what he had for lunch and dinner, how the first Lantern Rite he experienced was like. There are gaps in his memories that he doesn’t know how to fill, periods in his stay in Liyue that feel like endless, dark pits. He had never felt the need to fill the gaps, because all he needs to know is that he had played his part excellently and met all the Geo Archon’s expectations.
But after seeing how concerned the travelling duo looked... he supposes his business trip to Liyue would be a good chance as any to start piecing them together.
And perhaps he could start with this mysterious man named Zhongli.

Zhongli picked up Morax and tucked him into his arms. He stared down for so long it made it look like Zhongli was gazing not at a plushie but a real, breathing baby. Zhongli stared hard enough that he raised one hand, pulled off his glove, and began digging his nails into the tuft of fur between Morax's horns. Immediately, Morax shivered and started purring. Zhongli resumed scritching over Morax's forehead while he gave Childe a pointed look and said, "Childe, I will give you a few minutes. Explain to me why you have a dragon in your possession or you may explain to the Qixing why you have a proper dragon, especially one that has not yet been seen since the birth of Morax, in your care."
Childe swallowed, flicking his eyes down at Morax and back at Zhongli again. "Will you believe me if I said I just found him?"
In Teyvat exists a secret tribe called Creature Hunters who spend their entire lives caring for mythical creatures such as Phoenixes, Minotaurs, and Krakens. Childe is one of them. So when he finds a dragon one day, he realizes looking for its parents comes with the arduous task of also looking after Mister Zhongli, who for some reason is very good with dragons.
