On the phone, Chris had said she wanted to meet Knox at the coffee shop near her apartment, and she’d gotten there before Knox, which was no surprise. When he saw her, the oceans crashed, putting out the hope burning inside of him with the huge, churning waves that had disappeared before, sending billows of smoke and sorrow into the dark, cloudy sky.
He had to leave as soon as possible, for as long as he could afford. It didn’t matter, he could rebuild his savings when he got back. He had just finished college, so anywhere in Europe would be out of his price range. He figured a month would work just fine, and decided New York sounded nice.

Chris breaks up with Knox and he feels the need to get away. New York sounds perfect, and if he makes new friends, one of whom is extremely attractive, he can't complain.

“So?” Tobin’s eyes are still boring into Leif’s face, no matter how hard Leif is trying to avoid eye contact. After another beat of silence, Tobin’s face lights up with recognition. “So you want me to pretend to be your plus-one to make your parents happy?”
Leif looks so apologetic that Tobin almost agrees without thought, the only thought coursing through his brain being the urge to make him look less hurt and nervous.
