Summary
The Metros really were lousy at hockey. Shane Hollander was the only talent they had, which was why they threw the C on his chest before they even made it to the All Star break. The Raiders hadn’t given Ilya even an A yet. Coach had taken him aside and told him they weren’t going to think about a leadership role on the team until he’d finished his rookie year. He had enough to deal with, Coach said, which was nicer than saying Ilya was still nineteen, and his English sucked shit, and they weren’t quite done being worried about “character issues.”

And there’s Mocha, her skittish Siamese, going right up to him. The cat Ashley’s had since she was a teenager, who hates strangers, who ran even from her little brother during that first year, shoving the flat of her head against this man’s hand and turning around so he can pet along her outstretched spine. In his other hand, there’s a cigarette. He pulls at it periodically, turning his head from the wind and blowing the smoke away from Mocha.

Summary
During his weeks at the cottage the only people Shane usually had to interact with were his parents, and it was always so—nice. Such a relief. To not have to be a person, for a couple of weeks. Or, at least, to not have to be the kind of person other people seemed to think that he was, or that a hockey player was, or that a hockey player had to be. It wasn’t just about pretending he was straight. Sometimes, despite doing his best to ignore the jabs, Shane was forced to confront the fact that he really did often feel like a robot, and that the cottage was—for lack of better phrasing—his recharge time. And now—now Ilya was here. And Shane knew how to kiss him, how to play against him, how to be fucked by him, but there was no rulebook for this.
