He could barely hear the river over the sounds of ‘you are nothing but a pathetic little boy, and I’ll make sure you remember that’ in his head. Breathe in slowly. It ended up a sharp gasp, instead. A long, shuddering exhale. Footsteps behind him. Shit. As if his excruciatingly public breakdown earlier that week hadn't been enough. He cups some water in his hands and quickly splashes his face in an attempt to seem like he's just washing up."
