Her tongue learns the shape of his misaligned teeth without a trace of reservation, her fingers sink into the soft flesh near his hips like he’s the most desirable thing alive. She calls him sweet things like ‘handsome’ and ‘precious’ that he’s never even considered could apply to a guy like him. He’s awkward and annoying and cocky right up until it matters, but as soon as the mask of confidence breaks, she takes everything that lies beneath and makes it beautiful. She takes his ugliest parts and makes them holy.”

“'I… I don’t understand,' Yuno whispers. The dark shape on the floor dances to the wheelchair in the corner. The air looks warmer if Fuuta squints. Softer.
'She told you, right?' Fuuta looks to Yuno, then back to the corner. The shadow is gone. 'Her boyfriend. She was following him, and she failed. That was what she believed in, remember?' Mahiru sits in the wheelchair, her elegant wedding gown obscured by darkness. She’s beautiful, like an angel. She’s at peace. She makes him want to die too."
The prison is a lot darker in Mahiru's absence. Darkness looks different to Fuuta than it does to other people now. He and Yuno talk about it, about things lost, and about things missed out on.

Takeshi is the only one here who’s ever seen him so ugly. He’s seen Hiroaki bruised, bloody, sleep-deprived, vomiting, collapsing and breaking and crumbling, and stayed again and again. He’s seen him past his limit, sobbing in hysterics and self-sabotaging in every way he knows and finding new ones after that. And he stayed. And he kept staying. And Hiroaki lies, and keeps lying.
(Takes place in day 35, but no major spoilers!)

“'I need you too, Fuuta-kun.' Mahiru gradually lowers her head onto his shoulder, and he moves his hand to gently, soothingly comb through her hair. Soothing for both of them, most likely. 'Let me be here for you, okay? I-I want to.'”
Mahiru cannot live without love, and Fuuta cannot live without validation. It's not a sustainable feedback loop, but if him loving her is a lie kind to both of them, there are worse fates, right?

"It’s stupid, and definitely counterintuitive, but she can’t stop replaying it- that fateful span of what couldn’t have been more than ten minutes. She relives it in her mind’s eye over and over, each time picturing herself doing something, anything different that could’ve changed the outcome. He got what he deserved, but it isn’t satisfying. It doesn’t feel fair, not when she never got her closure."
Teruko can't pretend to be as detached as she wishes she was forever. She should be glad Xander is dead. Why isn't she glad Xander is dead? She finally breaks, and grieves what could have been.
