Summary
"The spell forces honesty out of the afflicted target," Edwin says promptly. "I seem to be compelled to answer any question, as well as unable to lie when answering."
There's a brief silence while everyone takes that in - including Edwin, who immediately looks down at the floor, lips pressed tightly together.
"So this is your actual nightmare," Crystal deadpans. "Great."
After their near-miss in the Tall Forest, Charles feels that he and Edwin are finally getting back to normal - until the Cat King's meddling shows him just how much his best mate has been keeping from him. With the cat's magic forcing Edwin to tell the truth, Charles must help him navigate not only troubling questions and unwilling answers, but their own partnership and the secrets between them that threaten to change everything.

Summary
"El," Margo says slowly, "out of curiosity, what did Penny tell you when he picked you up?"
"He said Q got cursed," Eliot wheezes out. "That it looked bad, and—he wouldn't give me details." When Margo only hums, he stares hard at the dark shape of her until his eyes readjust. "Why?"
"Well," Margo starts, then shrugs again instead of elaborating. "You know what, it's funnier this way. Just go."

Summary
All it took was one thought of skin-tight fabric, of slight resistance when pushing his fingers under the hem or tugging the waistband over Quentin's hips, and then Eliot couldn't stop thinking about it until he took action. So, one Margo-assisted shopping trip and a few minutes alone with Quentin's dresser later, here they are.
or: Eliot finally puts into motion a long-held plan to give Quentin a wardrobe upgrade... though he probably should've mentioned it to Quentin first.

Summary
"Why didn't you tell us your birthday was coming up?" Margo demands, all but leaping off the couch. "We would've started pregaming at the end of June!"
"There's still time," Eliot says, sitting up straighter. "We can break out the emergency scotch, and Hoberman probably owes me at least one favour—"
"Guys," Quentin cuts in weakly, "it's not really… I mean, look, I know you two are, like— you block off your entire birth months for one long party, I get it, I live here." He shrugs again under their matching impatient stares, slowly closing the book in his lap. "But I don't really… make a big deal out of mine."
or: Sometimes having a summertime birthday really sucks, but sometimes it really doesn’t.

Summary
Quentin Coldwater and Eliot Waugh don't exactly hit it off the first time they meet. Quentin is in the midst of a characteristic existential sulk, and Eliot is a sophisticate or a snob depending on who you ask, and certainly doesn't have time for a project. The next time they cross paths, they're both in serious relationships, and don't give a second thought to the pleasant hours they spend together on an airplane. The third time? Something finally sticks. Fresh off of heartbreak, the two men discover a best friend in one another, someone to confide in about what they've lost. And perhaps someone with whom happiness can once again be found...

Summary
"I honestly kind of forgot about it," Quentin admits, fumbling with the jacket buttons for an excuse to keep his head down. "I actually still have to go find out if I left my dress shoes in Jersey, and— fuck, I guess I need a tie, right?"
He glances at the mirror to find Eliot's eyes have lit up behind him. "Allow me," he says, then turns and flits out of the room. Quentin blinks after him, somewhat confused, but he barely has time to shoot Margo a questioning look before Eliot reappears, hands behind his back and a smile on his face. "Here."
With a flourish, he presents Quentin with a tie that must be his own, deep green and gold in a swirling pattern - paisley or something, Quentin thinks. "Do you know how to tie it?" Eliot prompts after a second, and Quentin realizes he's been too busy staring to react.
or: 5 times Quentin borrows something from Eliot’s closet, and 1 time Eliot takes a turn.

Summary
Unpossessed, with magic returned and all stakes considerably lower, Eliot still feels like he’s the one restless piece that hasn’t managed to fall back into place among everyone else. Then a misfired spell turns Quentin into a dog, which— doesn’t really help, honestly, and dog-sitting his ex-turned-basset-hound isn’t quite what Eliot expects to spend his week doing.
But it has been a while since he and Quentin have had much time alone, and the longer they spend together, the harder it is for Eliot to ignore all the things he’s been meaning to tell him.

Summary
What happens in Vegas does NOT stay in Vegas. When Margo and Quentin head on a spontaneous trip to Las Vegas without Eliot, they have a little too much fun and things get out of hand. Yeah, they sort of got married, but it's nothing a quick annulment can't fix. Eliot doesn't care at all, obviously. Why would it bother him?
Featuring: champagne and hotel room bubble baths, Margo's endless supply of corny pet names, a visit to Q's dad in Jersey, two over-the-top parties, and a guy named Brad.

Summary
"I knew back then that the spell worked for you," Quentin goes on, eagerness seeping back into his tone, "but neither of us had any idea— I mean, nobody remembers where it takes them, but it's still— it's nice to know." He's nearly grinning now, trying and failing to keep his excitement contained. "That it took you here, I mean. To me." His gaze flits over Eliot's face with something like awe, eyes wide and bright. "That we're soulmates."
or: Eliot takes an unexpected trip.

Summary
When their pack is killed by a lone alpha known only as the Beast, Quentin and Julia are taken in by a pack of city wolves who have a much different approach to things than they're used to. Reluctant as Quentin is to let his guard down, he can’t help being curious about his new packmates - especially Eliot, who seems determined to make him wonder if the chance to belong somewhere maybe isn't as far out of reach as he thought.
But Quentin knows that what he lost once he could lose again, and the Beast has never left survivors before… -

Summary
"That got me thinking," Eliot hums, sliding his fingers down the edge of Quentin's jaw, "about some other things that you might be more... receptive to than I originally thought. Other things you might like the feeling of."
His hand slips lower and lower, then stops just short of dipping under Quentin's shirt, his palm wide and warm on the side of his neck. Quentin can't help swallowing against the gentle pressure. "Like what?"

Summary
"Before you ask, pool party attendance is always mandatory."
Quentin pauses, thrown. "I didn't know Brakebills had a pool."
"It doesn't," Eliot agrees, then leads Quentin through the back door to the yard behind the Cottage where an inground pool is waiting for them, clear blue and sparkling in the sun.

Summary
While tracking down an elusive spellbook for his coven’s latest magical rent cheque, Eliot meets Quentin, a decidedly non-magical bookstore owner and, almost immediately, accidental curse victim. Despite the danger to the coven and to Quentin himself, Eliot has to bring him into his world of Hedges and magic to find a way to break the curse before Quentin’s time runs out.

Summary
One second Eliot is unbuttoning his waistcoat, watching Charlton-as-Hyman wrestle his pants off, mentally resigned to doing whatever this is for the rest of the afternoon, and the next he’s on a rocky cliff facing the sea, squinting in the sun as the wind blows his tie over his shoulder.
"Oh, thank fuck," says Margo.
Eliot comes to New Fillory, and everything turns out fine.

Summary
King Quentin seems to take their silence for discomfort and frowns guiltily. "Sorry, there's probably more important stuff I should be asking," he mumbles, fidgeting with his sleeve. "Is there, um, a cure for cancer? Who's the president?"
Eliot grimaces, and can practically feel the others doing the same.
"Ask about Zunes again," Penny says.
or: In order to take his rightful place as High King of Fillory, Eliot first has to meet the current king in Whitespire - King Quentin, who's been waiting for the High King to arrive in Fillory since he first ended up there himself.

Summary
"I'm glad you're having fun." Quentin pauses, curling up and trying to ignore the sudden butterflies in his stomach. "I, um. I miss you."
There's another loud crash in the background as he says it, definitely something breaking this time - Quentin is pretty sure he hears Margo laughing, and then something muffled before Eliot returns. "Wait, let me— hold on—" After a few more muffled seconds, the party noise cuts off so abruptly that Quentin thinks the call might have dropped. "Okay," Eliot sighs, sounding a little breathless. "I'm outside now. Jesus, this balcony is bigger than our living room. What did you say?"
Quentin takes a breath and— lets it out again, too nervous to repeat it. Eliot probably won't want to hear him get sentimental when he's having a good time, anyway. "Nothing. Um, tell Margo I said hi."
or: Quentin is pretty sure he and Eliot are on the same page about their whole not-really-dating thing, but it's probably a good idea to make sure, right?

Summary
Quentin cuts off when his brain catches up to his rambling and drops his gaze self-consciously. Of all the times to over-share, Half A Drink Deep in Eliot Waugh's Kitchen might really be the worst he's ever managed. He takes another sip and raises his glass a little, fighting the urge to cringe. "And I'm a lightweight," he finishes, trying for a joking tone. "But you probably guessed that already."
He risks a glance up at Eliot to find the other boy looking back at him with a smile, but it's not mean or jeering like Quentin had expected, it’s… soft, almost. It throws him so much that he forgets to look away, even when Eliot reaches out to take the half-empty drink from his hand. "I won't say the thought hadn't crossed my mind," Eliot hums, swapping out Quentin's glass for his own full one.
or: Quentin falls asleep at a house party and wakes up in Eliot's lap, to his horror (and Eliot's endearment), but at least it’s a hell of a conversation starter.
