Summary
Charles Smith considered himself many things. Quiet. Intelligent. Dependable to a fault. Occasionally, unintentionally rude. One thing he had never considered himself — physically or otherwise — was weak. Life had trained him too well for that. It had taught him the practiced motions of endurance, the reflexive bracing of the spine before impact, the careful distance one learned to keep from people, places, and hope itself. Complacency was a luxury. Attachment was a liability. When you lived a life as dangerous and unsettled as his, grief was not a question of if, but when — and it was easier not to invite it in at all.
All in all, Charles knew he was strong.
What he did not know — what sat heavy and unanswered in his chest — was whether that strength would be enough to carry the body of a man he cared for deeply down from a mountain.

Summary
Charles clears his throat. “Don’t mind Arthur,” he says, and can hear the warmth in his own voice, the softness with which his tongue speaks his name. He glances sideways to Eagle Flies, and shifts to sit more comfortably, crossing his legs. “He…acts.”

“We can’t, sir.” Soap cut him off. “You know the rules, it leads to an imbalance of power. I’d be pressured, with my career in your hands and all that…“ The words almost sound methodical, like he was citing them by memory.
Ghost stood frozen as he listened. He had prepared himself for rejection, figuring that regardless of the outcome, he could at least get it off his chest.
But this? Soap was saying that he didn’t feel comfortable around him. That he thought Ghost would take advantage of him.

When Ghost confessed his love towards Soap, the last thing he had expected was to be rejected. Suddenly terrified that he coerced Soap into interacting with him because of his higher rank.
