The second thing Kravitz notices is that he’s dying.
Kravitz makes a split-second decision that he may end up regretting. Taako tries to decide whether Kravitz saved his life or ended it.

Things could have gone differently. Kravitz and the Soldier could have been killed trying to escape the Red Room together. Or worse — the Soldier could have been forced into the chair and had his memories stripped away. Kravitz could be alone.
Instead, they have this and each other and they get to keep having it. They’re the best assassins in the world, expensively for hire, and unattached to anyone but each other. Kravitz wouldn't trade this for anything.

Kravitz wakes up in a stranger's body twenty years after his untimely death, bound by a curse whose terms he's absolutely not going to fulfill. He's got a month off from the afterlife and he's going to spend that time doing what he wants to do—Kravitz is going to find his husband.
Only Taako isn't exactly looking for new friends, and he may be more closely tied to the curse than Kravitz realized.

“I am His Royal Highness, Prince Kravitz of Neverwinter,” Kravitz says, focusing on Taako, sprawled out on the floor. “I was cursed to prick my finger on my twenty-fifth birthday and fall into a deep sleep that could only be broken by true love’s kiss. A sleep you woke me from.”
Taako, who apparently has no idea who Kravitz is and was definitely in the middle of robbing the palace when he stopped and decided to kiss an unconscious body, freezes in place, eyes wide with surprise.
“Holy shit,” says the human man standing behind him. “This is totally worth twenty gold.”
Kravitz wakes up five hundred years in the future. Taako grapples with the consequences of waking a sleeping a prince. True love involves more breaking and entering than one might think.

Taako scowls. “Why are you leaving four hundred year old—” He covers his mouth as he starts coughing, trying not to choke as something pushes its way up throat, dropping from his lips into his waiting hands—a single gold coin, gleaming and new and spotted with blood.

As the moon rises above the treeline, Taako smells the distinctive scent of big magic—ozone, hanging thick in the air. The bird unfurls its wings, growing larger and shifting before Taako’s eyes until it's no longer a bird at all, but the most handsome man Taako’s ever seen.
He’s dark-skinned, with long dreadlocks that tumble down over his shoulders, dressed in a fine suit that’s years out of date, but perfectly preserved. His cheekbones are high and his gaze is sharp. He studies Taako and Magnus from the other side of the thorn bush, and tilts his head, considering them. “You’re a long way from home,” the man says. “Didn't anyone warn you about the dangers lurking in the Felicity Wilds after the sun goes down?”

The royal palace is a tourist attraction. Wrapped in mystery and impenetrable briars, shielded with thick layers of magic and preservation spells, breaking the curse is the greatest arcane challenge in all of Faerun. Tours draw in visitors year round.
Taako has been obsessed with the palace since his aunt dragged him and Lup there as kids and told them about how five hundred years earlier, a warlock had cursed the royal family and ended their rule. Not because he’s into history or whatever, but because he’s thinking ten steps ahead—he’s thinking about resale value.

There is an incorporeal form hovering above Taako — a woman, who wears Taako’s face, phantasmal and resplendent, cloaked in a red robe. Her eyes are full of scorn as she looks down at Kravitz, like this lich thinks he is the one who poses a danger here.
Kravitz breaks the umbrastaff and frees Lup early. His life gets a lot more complicated.

The Hallwinter assignment is a surprise. Kravitz takes one look at Hallwinter’s profile during the briefing — billionaire, built a robot suit, fighting terrorism on his own with no oversight — and mentally assigns it to a particular class of agent: young, female, attractive. The kind of person a billionaire would hire as a personal assistant. Carey, maybe.
Instead, the Director slides a dossier across the table to Kravitz.

Fantasy IKEA is big, blue, and beautiful. It’s a shining beacon of good fantasy Swedish design. It’s the kind of place you go to for inexpensive flat-pack furniture to send with your communal child to Lucas’s Academy of Arcane Science, lest he end up with a dorm full of handmade, lavender-scented furniture carved by one of the Seven Birds and lose all hope of maybe being seen as an average boy genius.
It's the kind of place you to go for cheap meatballs and family bonding.
