Jack is in his arms. Not walking beside him timidly like a kid in the company of someone they don't know in an uncomfortable situation. In his arms and looking for all the world like it isn't the first time.
The look on JJ's face is more than he can take, and Rossi isn't much better. He won't fold if Haley doesn't, and she's reading the situation perfectly. He's gotta hand it to her.
"What am I walking into?" she asks, touching Derek's elbow, holding him back a bit while JJ gets Jack's car seat into their SUV. "How bad is it?"
"Honestly…I don't know."
"You haven't seen him?"
"Only for a minute before he realized Foyet was after you and Jack. I had to come get you, I couldn't let anyone else come."
"Is he okay?"
"I really don't know. He was just coming out of anesthesia, Haley. They said he was stabbed nine times. No major arteries, so Foyet knew exactly how to keep him from bleeding out, but that doesn't mean nothing else was damaged in there. Nine times…"

"Uh, well, I had all sorts of cool plans for a group with a mix of voices. Some really fun arrangements. But…since it's just me and I'm not much of a singer, I was thinking I could pull off Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Maybe We Wish You a Merry Christmas, except…there's no we. So do I change it to I Wish You a Merry Christmas?"
He hesitated a moment, thinking through several quick layers of repercussions for what he was about to say, and then swallowed it all down. Garcia needed him. What did he have to lose, anyway? He'd been served divorce papers in front of his entire team. Rock bottom was where he lived and singing a couple of beautiful Christmas carols couldn't make it any worse.
"I've got some experience singing O Holy Night with a church choir," he said in a voice that was thin and uncertain. It lacked all of his usual self-assuredness, all of the confidence she was used to. "If you know it, that is."

Hank was already gone, dropped off at Fran's house for the day because it was just what he did on Saturdays. Those were Grammy days. "Really. I don't need any fuss. I'm old."
"No fuss. Wouldn't dream of it."
To Hotch it sounded like a lie, but Derek didn't elaborate. He was teasing and he was enjoying it.
"I mean it. Don't overdo it. I'm tired, Derek." The entire flight back to Chicago, all he could think about was his birthday. About how Derek was going to throw him some massive surprise party and invite everyone they'd ever known because sixty was a big deal, it was enough to chew his stomach up into a bloody pulp by the time the plane landed.
"When have I ever overdone it?"
"Every single year I've known you."
