Tommy's always been a runner.
When his mum and dad would fight, he'd run. Run off to Freddie's. Run off to Eryn's. It didn't matter where, just that he was running.
Once he moved out, life was slow and easy for a while. The troubles with his flat were ones he could overlook, and he was genuinely having fun with his work.
But then Ranboo came along.

When Ranboo and Tommy admit their feelings to each other before Tommy’s two-week trip to the big apple, it complicates things.
They both want the same thing, but either Tommy has to stop running, or Ranboo has to try and catch up.

Tommy was handed a small flyer in printed in black and white, with the words “POETRY NIGHT - OPEN MIC” splayed across the front in bubbled font. He fumbled with his binder as he took it, eyes wide as he said, “are you sure? I mean, I love poetry and all, but I don’t think-I’m not sure—what if I can’t write poetry?”
Mr. Sam’s dark eyes softened, and he reached out to place a hand on Tommy’s shoulder, squeezing it gently. “Everyone has to start somewhere; every poet, from me to Rudy Francisco, started off without knowing a clue about what we were doing. Tommy released Ranboo from the hug to look at him and he sure did have the look of someone newly engaged. “As of last night."

"You're all talk and no game." Tommy laughed, rolling his eyes, "All bark, no bite, y-"
Lips crashed into his own, the taste of cherry lip balm invading his senses. A shocked gasp left his lungs when the other departed, eyebrows fixed in a sort of angry confidence.
It was nearly lost on him how many people surrounded the two, but the eyes that bore into Tommy's skin were more than enough to stop an increasing urge to grab Ranboo and pull him back in.
OR; Tommy and Ranboo have always had tension between them. When you grow up, that tension can switch up on you.
