There he meets the very people who will set up the rest of his life, and is forced to confront the pieces of himself he'd long thought had been lost.

I've changed this description a thousand times. None of them felt honest. I just wanted to read a story of broken people finding each other and dancing to good music in the middle of nowhere. I also wanted to figure out how to write about consuming love. The beginning isn't great, it slowly gets better. It's dramatic, extreme, a very unrealistic love story. But it is a love story. And there are a few lines that make me smile.

After a moment, El rears her head back, uncertain. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” Max breathes, and she isn’t sure if it’s the winter chill, the late hour, or El’s proximity that gives her the courage to say: “You can…do it again. If you want.”
There’s a moment of utter silence during which Max begins to ponder the absolute depth of her own stupidity, but then—lips fall to her cheek. El lingers, breathing out against Max’s skin.

Here's the thing: Mike didn't always believe. Not all the time, not every day.
When he awoke at the hospital, hooked to a host of chirping machines, there was a nurse at his bedside. She said that he had suffered complications from severe shock and his heart had stopped for two and a half minutes. If his sister hadn't performed textbook-perfect CPR on him at the scene, he'd probably be dead.

A silly thought crossed his mind, but with nothing else to say and no other solution brewing in his mind, he let it linger and spoke up.
“How much would you need, do you think, to get back to normal?” “Blood, you mean?” El responded with another question, and took his silence as confirmation that her speculation was right.
“I guess…maybe four hundred milliliters? Definitely under a pint anyway” she surmised, shrugging her shoulders as best she could from her position. Her response made him smirk, a tiny seed of hope sprouting in his chest, and when she spotted it, he heard her say “What, what is it?”
Unsure of what her opinion would be of what he was suggesting, he lowered his voice and turned his head away, fearing the potential rejection.

Her eyelids felt heavy, and the strength it took to hold them open was enormous. Concentrating on Mike helped, as she rarely wanted to look away. But Mike was searching her eyes, and she wished she knew what for. She wanted to say something that would reassure the worry and confusion in his features, but she knew friends don’t lie. And she would’ve had to lie in order to say anything of any comfort. Mostly, though, it was his confusion that scared her; it had always seemed to her that Mike knew everything, especially when it came to her. Somehow, he had always known what she was thinking and that had been a comfort since she met him.
She couldn’t deny the warmth that came from being cared for by Mike Wheeler. But those feelings fought alongside her innate desire to hide her problems, to not bother another with her own pain, to shy away from the tenderness of his care.Bookmarked by mayjanxx
