Stebbins turned to him slowly, like the world had to catch up with the movement. It made him feel sick. “Ray Garraty. Do you like me?”
Garraty blinked, cheeks flushed. “Uh, yeah? I mean, yeah. Of course I do. We’re friends.”
“Nooo,” Stebbins said, drawing the word out. “I mean do you liiiiike me. Like how you like him.” He pointed at McVries, except it was more of a vague gesture toward the sky.
Garraty laughed nervously. “Shut up. You’re drunk.”
“I know,” Stebbins said proudly. Then he poked Garraty’s knee. “But I’m also not wrong.”
McVries, who had been watching the whole thing with an amused smirk, leaned in again and bumped his nose against Stebbins’ cheek. “You’re kind of a brat when you’re drunk.”

So as he was approaching McVries’ dorm, he knew his place in this situation. He was a gift in this relationship.
While Garraty and McVries lived their university dreams of having a perfect relationship together, Stebbins was nothing more than a gift. A way for Garraty to feed his fascination while McVries got to spoil Garraty with allowing Stebbins in.
But not fully, he thought to himself. He knew he was just here temporarily. Garraty would soon be bored of his current obsession and move on to something else, Stebbins no longer being allowed to sneak his way into this relationship. He already knew that once the chase was over, Garraty would stop trying so hard to claim Stebbins, losing the fun of running after him.
Or, Stebbins joins McVries and Garraty’s relationship, not fully realising his role is more important than he first understood
