Summary
Nathaniel Wesninski was eight years old when his father sold him to the Moriyamas.
At the Nest, he learns quickly what survival really costs: obedience, silence, and the careful art of not breaking where anyone can see. Tetsuji’s attention is suffocating, Riko’s promises rot into something sharp and cruel, and the only thing Nathaniel is allowed to keep is the quiet certainty that none of this is love. Her eyes were brown, too, though a much, much darker brown than Andrew and Aaron’s. Maybe Olwen got them from her mother. Andrew’s eyes, in the sunlight, sometimes looked more gold than brown, according to Neil’s disgustingly flattering words. Olwen’s were duller and darker, like maybe, at one point, they could have been the same as Andrew’s, but had been stained by the rottenness of humankind.

After practice one day, Nicky gets a call from a social worker, asking him if he is available to take in one more Minyard—a seven-year-old girl named Olwen, and Andrew and Aaron's half-sister. They take her in without hesitation. It doesn't take long for Andrew to realize he understands Olwen all too much, and Aaron is quickly terrified that he doesn't understand her enough.

“Who was that?” Andrew’s tone is that careful neutral he always maintains it at, but Nicky knows better than to assume he feels any such way. He’s only now learning how to better read the younger man, but anger is an emotion he knows well enough to pick up with ease.
Still, Nicky sighs and leans back on his elbow. This doesn’t matter, he knows it, he just has to make sure the twins know it too. “Just some lame homophobe with a complex,” he says, and means it too. “Never met him before.”
Aaron scoffs. “Bullshit.”
