“Good morning darling,” he says, squatting down to scratch behind the beagle’s ears the way he likes.
David snuffles between his knees for a moment, before he surges forward and presses his snout into Henry’s belly. It startles the man, nearly knocking him backward.
“Whoa!” Henry gently nudges David back from his middle. “What’s gotten into you boy?”
David whines a little, bringing his face back toward Henry’s stomach. He snuffles there, looking up at Henry with big, almost pleading eyes.
Henry hesitates, scratching his ears once more, but this time warily. “Is something the matter, boy?”
He’s heard stories of dogs being able to detect serious illnesses in their owners before even medical science could. He really, really hopes that isn’t what’s happening here.

The whole time Henry was in the hospital, Alex had an odd, sad look on his face. Henry had been too irritable to work out why, it was just a broken leg. He assumed Alex was tired and ready for them both to go home, to get away from the doctors and nurses and overly protective staff his grandmother sent.
